2001 Stamp Presentation Pack

This triple-fold Presentation Pack includes a selection of 18 different stamps: a First Day Cover (FDC) affixed with six Definitive Gummed Stamp Set bearing first day (Dec. 4, 2001) cancellation postmarks, a Definitive Self-adhesive Stamps Set strip of six with 'Fellowship' film logo, and a complete set of six Miniature Sheets featuring key scenes and pivotal characters from 'The Fellowship of the Ring' motion picture.

All the elements were designed by Sacha Lees of Weta Workshop - part of the same creative and design team nominated for three Academy Awards and winner of two 2001 BAFTA Awards. These Presentation Packs were available from New Zealand Post shops from December 4th, 2001 and most shops sold out in the following weeks. It's likely many were destined to be Christmas presents for young, or new fans of the movie and J.R.R. Tolkien.

Presentation Pack dimensions are 8 1/4 H x 23 5/8" W; 210 x 600 mm fully opened, and 8 1/4 H x 9 3/8" W; 210 x 240 mm folded. Items are mounted behind clear, archival-quality brackets, and the Presentation Pack folder comes sealed in a heavy-duty clear protective slipcase. The Presentation Pack also provides detailed information about the official 2001 'Fellowship of the Ring' stamp issue and the respective motion picture. Folder's front cover features a silk-screened silhouette of The Fellowship on the march against a charcoal background, with the Official Movie logo set above in gold and brown. Self-Adhesive Stamps Sheet
actual size: 1 5/8 H x 8" W; 41 x 203 mm
Set of six self adhesive stamps with official LotR: Fellowship logos
Sheet with complete 2001 set of self-adhesive stamps and official 'The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring' logo. Designed for postal vending machines, they are a different size (26 x 37 mm; 1 x 1 1/2") and aspect ratio than the gummed stamps (25 x 50 mm; 1 x 2"), and as a result are more fully framed.

40 cent stamp design: Gandalf tells Saruman that the centuries long lost One Ring is found

Walking in the garden of Isengard, the wizard Gandalf the Grey (Sir Ian McKellen) tells Saruman the White (Christoper Lee), that the long lost Ruling Ring of the Dark Lord has been found, unaware that Saruman also means to obtain it. Abroad, the dark forces of Sauron, in the sinister black-cloaked shape of the Ringwraiths, search for the One Ring that rules all others.

80 cent stamp design: Galadriel had the wisdom to refuse the One Ring when freely offered by Frodo

The Lady of the Golden Wood, Galadriel (Cate Blanchett), founded and became Queen of Lorien during the War of the Ring. Although offered the One Ring by Frodo, she refused aware of its corrupting powers.

90 cent stamp design: Frodo and friends enjoy some refreshment at the Inn of the Prancing Pony, Bree

Frodo Baggins - The Ringbearer (Elijah Woods), accompanied by his good friends Sam Gamgee (Sean Astin) and Pippin (Billy Boyd) enjoy a quiet ale in the Inn of the Prancing Pony in Bree, while nervously awaiting the arrival of Gandalf the Grey. All pandemonium breaks out when Frodo vanishes in front of the locals.

1.30 dollar stamp design: Unaware of having been on the brink of death, Frodo awakens in Rivendell

After having been almost killed in the mines of Moria by a Morgul knife whilst escaping the pursuing Ringwraiths, Frodo regains consciousness in Rivendell, unaware of having been on the brink of death. Gandalf tells him The Fellowship are now safe under the protection of the Elves, and that the Council of Elrond and several old friends including his uncle Bilbo (Ian Holm) await.

1.50 dollar stamp design: Strider eavesdrops on the hobbits from the shadows - is this Ranger friend or foe?

The mysterious stranger, Aragorn son of Arathorn (Viggo Mortensen), watches the hobbits from the shadows in the Inn of the Prancing Pony, Bree. One of the secretive band of Rangers who roam the wild lands, he goes by the uncommon name of Strider. Aragorn is later revealed to be none other than Dunedain, Chieftain of Arnor and of royal blood.

2.00 dollar stamp design: Boromir calls The Fellowship to arms with the ancient Horn of Gondor

Boromir (Sean Bean) of Gondor, son of Denethor II, blows the ancient Horn of his people to warn of a raiding party of savage Uruk-Hai. Boromir fell valiantly defending Pippin and Merry, shortly after Frodo left The Fellowship to strike out for Mordor on his own. Boromir's earlier misgivings about destroying The Ring undoubtedly foretold his downfall.

Miniature Sheets: Regular perforated stamps set in an attached illustrated panel showing the origin of the stamp, each of which are derived from key scenes in 'Fellowship of the Ring' motion picture.

First Day Covers: Pictorial envelopes which are issued and stamped with a specifically-designed cancellation stamp that is only used for that day and issue. The cancellation stamp for this First Day Cover is a stylized Eye of Sauron encircled by the words 'The Fellowship of the Ring, First Day of Issue, 4 December 2001, Stamps Centre Wanganui New Zealand'.

Additional Info: Loose gummed and self-adhesive stamps are unhinged mint (UHM), First Day Covers (FDC) are unaddressed.
