Two regular First Day Covers (FDC) were issued - one with all the Self Adhesive denominations, the second with the Gummed stamps set. These envelopes feature different designs and were available separately, as a set of two, in the Full Set, or the latter as part of the Presentation Pack. New Zealand Post's 2001 'The Fellowship of the Ring' philatelic issue is the only stamp release officially licensed by New Line Cinema and approved by the film's director, Peter Jackson. Both the First Day Covers and Stamps were designed by Sacha Lees at Weta Workshop - one of the same team nominated for three 2002 Academy Awards and winner of two prestigious BAFTA Awards in 2001.

First of the Fellowship philatelic items to be sold out and now hard to find. Designed for postal vending machines, self-adhesives are smaller (26 x 37 mm; 1 x 1 1/2") than the corresponding gummed stamps (25 x 50 mm; 1 x 2"), and are framed in a different aspect ratio. |

First Day Covers: Pictorial envelopes which are issued and stamped with a specifically-designed cancellation stamp that is only used for that day and issue. Cancellation stamp for these First Day Covers is a stylized Eye of Sauron encircled by the words 'The Fellowship of the Ring, First Day of Issue, 4 December 2001, Stamps Centre Wanganui New Zealand'.
