Greetings from Aotearoa New Zealand, one of the world's youngest archipelagos and first country to greet the new millennium, also the stand-in locale for Tolkien's Middle-earth during the seven year-long production of Peter Jackson's 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy. For a saga set in a mythical world you might find it rather surprising to learn that few of the landscapes in the movie trilogy were matt backdrops (or 'matts' as these background paintings are known) or computer generated images (CGI). One of the reasons that NZ was chosen for the locations was the diverse range of landscapes that could encompass the world as described in J.R.R. Tolkien's books and imagination. A complete list of filming locations will be available late 2002 when The Lord of the Rings Location Guide by Ian Brodie (ISBN 1869504526) is published.![]() If you are looking for 'The Lord of the Rings' stamps and collectibles, we suggest you start with a major Search Engines such as Goggle or check on eBay to locate a particular item.
