New Zealand's Postal Authority will issue three comprehensive sets of 'The Lord of the Rings' official stamps as tie-ins coinciding with the release of the related motion pictures: 'Part One: The Fellowship of the Ring', 'Part Two: The Two Towers', and 'Part Three: The Return of the King'. maximum postcard of Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) and Arwen (Liv Tyler)Director Peter Jackson, his cast, and crew of thousands spent over 274 days in a marathon shoot of all three films simultaneously beginning October 11, 1999 through December 22, 2000 across the length and breadth of Aotearoa. This almost seven year-long, US$250 million production filmed entirely in N.Z. represents a landmark in 'kiwi' movie making. These philatelics designed by Sacha Lees at Weta Workshop, capture the essence of J.R.R. Tolkien's timeless Middle Earth saga in a form that cinema enthusiasts, stamp lovers, and literary fans will treasure and enjoy for years to come.
“One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them.
One Ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them.”
From it's unlikely beginnings - a father writing a bedtime tale for his children - that inspiration evolved over time and several books into an entirely new, and believable realm populated by mythical creatures and cultures. Thumbnail of first day cover with miniature sheet Strider stampLater published as 'The Hobbit (or There and Back Again),' by Oxford professor of literature John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, this imaginative story introduced readers to many of the characters that would later take them on an epic adventure in a series of three tomes collectively known as 'The Lord of the Rings.' That epic adventure of good battling over evil, is an heroic quest set in a time of uncertainty where the very future rests upon control of the long lost One Ring. Fate has delivered this Ruling Ring of the Dark Lord into the possession of a young hobbit, Frodo Baggins, who takes us on an amazing odyssey into the very heart of Darkness...

As the only philatelic releases licensed by New Line Cinema, the New Zealand Postal Authority worked with Weta Workshop on the stamp designs and all the images used were personally approved by the film's director, Peter Jackson (Heavenly Creatures, The Frighteners, Bad Taste, Brain Dead, and Dead Alive).

Be warned that here are several illegal 'Lord of the Rings' issues in circulation purporting to be from ex-Russian republics or other countries. These are actually printed labels having the appearance of real postage stamps, intended to deceive collectors and are referred to as counterfeits, fakes, Cinderellas or fantasy labels. You can find more information on avoiding them courtesy of PWMO and Wax Museum of Illegal Stamps.
